Matthew Clayton Brown was founded in 1991 by current President Stephen W. Clayton and former colleague William Perry Brown IV. Clayton and Brown sought to establish a collection of trusted art specialists to assist clients in navigating the complexities of the art industry.
Since its inception thirty years ago, the appraisers at Matthew Clayton Brown have built a large network of clients, collectors, fellow appraisers and knowledgeable experts in countless subjects all across the world.

Stephen W. Clayton
​
Matthew Clayton Brown was founded in 1991 by current President Stephen W. Clayton and former colleague William Perry Brown IV. Stephen has been a member of the Appraisers Association of America (AAA) and certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) since 1999. With over 30 years’ experience and a Master’s Degree in Art History from the University of Georgia, Stephen has been a private consultant since 1978 for many national museums as well as private clients. He has also served as an art historian and cataloguer for the New Orleans Auction Galleries and the Napoleonic Society of America.

Robyn Dunn Schwarz

Before joining Matthew Clayton Brown in 2006, Robyn was an Assistant Vice President in Impressionist and Modern Art at Sotheby’s for nine years. Prior to Sotheby’s, she worked with George Stern Fine Arts, Los Angeles, a leading art dealer specializing in California paintings, and Nedra Matteucci’s Fenn Galleries, Santa Fe. Robyn has been a member of the Appraisers Association of America since 2007 and is certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). She is also a board member and past president of the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, as well as a member of Art Table and the Director’s Council of the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Marie Louise de la Vergne

Marie Louise de la Vergne has been with Matthew Clayton Brown since 2003. Prior to this, she worked at Neal Auction Company as a furniture specialist and at Sotheby's in marketing. Marie Louise has attended Attingham Summer School in England, Sotheby's Institute for Asian Art, American Fine and Decorative Art, and New York University for Fine and Decorative Art Appraisal Services. Marie Louise is certified in Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). She is also a licensed and bonded auctioneer in the state of Louisiana.
